With election night ending, one thing is clear: Alberta has no place in this country.
While the election results have yet to be finalized, it is all but inevitable that the blue wave of 2019 is destined to repeat itself, with only one or two ridings in the province not voting Conservative.
This year, that riding is Edmonton—Strathcona, with the NDP leading the Conservatives by 1,565 votes as of 9 p.m. MT.
Regardless of this urban exception, it is clear that Alberta at large desperately wants a Conservative government but will continue to be beholden to the Liberal stronghold entrenched in Southern Ontario.
In response to the blue wave in 2019, a significant #WEXIT trend began on Twitter with such furious strength behind it that an Alberta First movement manifested as the Maverick Party. While the party failed to win any seats — possibly because O’Toole’s vote-splitting message got to Albertans — the party became well known.
So too did the PPC, which campaigned in Alberta with the promise of lessening or ending equalization payments to subsidize the fractured economies of Eastern Provinces.
Indeed, most of what makes Alberta economically strong, such as the oil industry, is all but hamstrung by the rest of Canada, with Quebec, BC, and Manitoba often protesting Alberta’s pipelines, exports, and provincial character every step of the way.
Thus, as with any abusive relationship, it may be time for a well overdue divorce.
