Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Toronto Police Operations announced that several schools have received bomb threats starting late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
The OPP released an update on Wednesday afternoon, indicating they were “investigating multiple bomb threats across parts of northern and eastern Ontario.”
Police have not determined who is making the threats as they continue to investigate. At the time of publication police have not found any suspicious devices or actual bombs in any of the schools.
“The threats targeted multiple schools under multiple school boards and other facilities, demanding payment,” the OPP said.
Public as well as Catholic and Jewish schools have closed as a result of the threats. The Northeastern Catholic District School Board kept all students home as did the District School Board Ontario North East. At least four school boards closed all of their schools.
“A bomb threat at my elementary school. This is what it feels like to be Jewish in 2023,” said X user Lorne Geller.
The OPP further said their cyber investigation team has become involved.
“The public is always encouraged to report any suspicious activity that could be a risk to public safety. Anyone with information is urged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).”
