Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has thrown his endorsement behind radical socialist candidate Duncan Kinney for the upcoming Senate vote.
Kinney, a blogger and struggling podcaster, has asserted that “capitalism is a literal death cult and must be defeated,” among other extreme ideas.
I am also not averse to some good satire. @JettThunders is a great community leader in real life and @duncankinney has … an interesting take. You're allowed to vote for up to three "nominees" (who are not guaranteed to be named to the Senate)

After endorsing Karina Pillay, Nenshi went on to further endorse two more Senate candidates on Twitter.
“Jett Thunders is a great community leader in real life and Duncan Kinney has… an interesting take. You’re allowed to vote for up to three ‘nominees’,” Nenshi said.
Indeed, Kinney certainly does have a history of providing ‘interesting take[s];.’
In his professional life, Kinney leads Progress Alberta — an organization so left-wing they rarely refer to Edmonton as Edmonton, opting for the Indigenous name Amiskwacîwâskahikan (can he even pronounce that?). He also serves as the editor and host of The Progress Report, a self-proclaimed ‘award losing podcast,’ and has his pronouns in his Twitter bio.
In 2020, Kinney took up the fight against Western Separatism by claiming that — you guessed it — it was being led by the mythical racist neo-Nazis (who are apparently everywhere) because a fringe youth group were photographed at a rally. Kinney, a living beacon of honesty, claimed they were “leaders” of the movement.
Additionally, while Kinney is not openly involved with the organization ANTIFA, he has hosted Black Lives Matter members on his podcast, and has advocated people be actively anti-racist — i.e. bend the knee to those responsible for destroying America in 2020.
Kinney is also, of course, in favour of vaccine passports, targeting anyone who stands against them by labelling them anti-vaxxers. He went so far as to mischaracterize protests as being “against medicine,” rather than being pro-freedom.
So much for my body, my choice.
In 2016, Kinney also became vocally in favour of a Carbon Tax — which many believe is the reason why gas prices are hitting record highs right now — saying that anyone who criticizes them is in favour of “economic inequality.”

So, taxing the working class for the audacity of driving to work will help their financial situation?
“More than a third of the price of gas is actually tax in many provinces. In fact, Canadians even have to pay taxes on top of taxes when they fill up the tank.” https://t.co/xLHG1UWEqM

This was only the beginning of his vocal endorsement of socialist policies and socialism more generally.
More recently, he criticized the NDP for not being socialist enough and also said that “… capitalism is a literal death cult and must be defeated.”

According to Kinney, the entire Senate election is a “scam,” but says that it provides the perfect opportunity to decarbonize, decolonize, and democratize the country.
“We can’t stop Jason Kenney from abusing the powers of government and the public purse to run this right-wing voter-engagement scheme of his, but that doesn’t mean we can’t turn it against him,” writes Kinney.
“Alberta is not the conservative hellscape so many people think it is. There are more of us than there are of them, actually. And the Campaign to Elect Duncan Kinney for “Senate” is going to get all of us to those municipal elections. It’s going to get all of us talking about real issues that really matter, like decolonizing, decarbonizing and democratizing this country.”
“… [And] nothing is going to stick in [Kenney’s] craw more than a lefty coming out on top in his little game.”
the only journalist to accurately sum up my "senate campaign" so far is… @colbycosh?
"His entire platform is “this Senate election is illegitimate and stupid, but wouldn't it be amusing if I won anyhow?” (We'll take the bait: yes, it would!)" #ableg https://t.co/uTpHumTnt5— Kinney 4 "Senate" (@duncankinney) October 6, 2021
In terms of his platform, Kinney says that he wants to “talk about real justice and redress for the First Nations” and the evils of “unfettered capitalism.”
He says his ultimate goal with this campaign is to make sure Kenney has to “suffer the embarrassment of writing a reference letter to the Prime Minister for an anti-colonial environmentalist lefty….”
