FLASHBACK: Young Trudeau says Canada will never outlaw firearms

A 2010 video of Justin Trudeau before he became prime minister has resurfaced in which he says Canada will never outlaw firearms.

In the video, Trudeau, then a Member of Parliament, appears to be advocating for a gun registry which he says is a piece in the puzzle to counteracting crime because it makes firearms easier to track.

The public’s fear in registering guns is that it’s the government’s first step to “taking away guns from everyone,” he said.

“That’s never going to happen,” a young Trudeau says.

“Because here in Canada, we have a culture that has grown up with guns, and respects the needs to go out into the wilderness and shoot things from time to time.”

Stephen Harper, the Conservative prime minister while Trudeau made these comments, eventually scrapped Canada’s long gun registry.

Trudeau became prime minister in 2015.

Of course, the Trudeau Liberals have been the most anti-firearms government in Canadian history.

In May, the Liberals announced their plan to implement a freeze on importing, buying, selling or transferring handguns. The government also tabled the required regulatory amendments in the House of Commons and the Senate.

Speaking from Vancouver on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said the regulations had come into effect.

“We have frozen the market for handguns in this country,” Trudeau said. “This is one of the strongest actions we’ve taken on gun violence in a generation.”

The measure is a response to rising gun crime — though stats show most firearms-related offences are not from legally owned or purchased weapons.

The Counter Signal reported in September that most guns seized in Toronto are smuggled into Canada from the US. A Toronto Police Service Twitter post shows that 55 of 77 guns seized by Toronto police from June to August were not legal to own in Canada, meaning they were illegally smuggled.
