Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, a politician who was made infamous by the WE scandal and being kicked out of foreign countries, is in hot water once again over sharing media flagged as “manipulated” by Twitter.

The media in question pertains to Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole’s 2020 comments regarding healthcare and whether it should be privatized in Canada. While O’Toole’s initial “yes” is clear in the video, his justifications for his position are clearly so overwhelmingly doctored that even the liberal-leaning Twitter had to put out a disclaimer for users.

“Would you be prepared to allow Provinces to experiment with real healthcare reform, including the provision for private, for-profit, and non-profit healthcare revisions inside of universal coverage,” an interviewer asks.
“Yes,” replies O’Toole. “Now, I’ll elaborate a little bit more —”
But O’Toole does not get to elaborate. The video immediately jumps to later interview sections which better suit a liberal framing of the centrist politician, showing him in the worst light.
“The tweets in question have both been labelled in line with our global synthetic and manipulated policy,” Twitter Canada later told the CBC.
Said policy refers to any content which is edited in such a way that alters timing, sequencing, framing, or is outright fabricated, which much of the video is.
The real video can be viewed here, close to the 12:30 mark. In the video, O’Toole stresses — multiple times — the necessity of universal access, and that his plan would involve an expansion of the healthcare system, not a reduction. This context is, of course, removed from Freeland’s dishonest Tweet.
Never shying away from scandals, PM Justin Trudeau later retweeted Freeland, either oblivious to the nature of the content or complicit in the spread of misinformation. He even went so far as to utilize the propaganda while on the campaign trail in New Brunswick, desperate to malign his opposition.
In response, Mathew Clancy, the CPC’s manager of media relations, said, “It’s disappointing to see the Liberals resort to American-style divisive politics.
“While Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are focused on spreading misinformation, Erin O’Toole is focused on Canada’s Recovery Plan and securing the future.”
Trudeau has yet to comment on the intentional spread of misinformation by his cabinet members.
