A family has moved out of Ottawa amid increasing anti-Israeli sentiment in the nation’s capital, culminating in a red triangle—seen as a death threat—spray-painted onto their children’s daycare sign.

Jewish family moves out of Ottawa after red triangle spray painted onto child’s daycare

Speaking to the National Post, Emily Rappaport said they’ve relocated to Montreal.

“There was a giant inverted red triangle painted on the welcome sign. That is a known symbol for literally killing Jews. It means, ‘this is a target, kill Jews here.’ That was it for me. I was done,” she said.

Rappaport said this incident was the last straw following several others that have occurred since October 7, 2023.

From anti-Israel posters on lampposts, to rallies against Israel, to encountering a man in her bagel shop wearing a Hezbollah logo on his sweatshirt, Rappaport explained that she no longer felt safe living in Ottawa.

Along with the red triangle, her child’s preschool also received a bomb threat, leading police to search the premises with a police dog. Kids were told the dog was from Paw Patrol, the children’s TV show, while the threat was deemed to be for intimidation purposes—for now.

“Every day we had police cars outside. There were two times they had to be evacuated,” she said.

Rappaport has since moved to Montreal, seeking a more Jewish-friendly neighborhood and a public school with Jewish students. Her move preceded an intelligence report warning Canada’s top spy agency of the “realistic possibility” that a terrorist attack targeting Jewish Canadians could occur.
