Speaking to reporters, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek suggested that Millennials being forced to rent instead of owning homes was proof they were “liberated” and a sign of their “freedom”.
In what can best be described as an Orwellian declaration, Gondek explained, “We’re starting to see a segment of the population reject this idea of owning a home, and they’re moving towards rental because it gives them more freedom.”
“They can travel to different places, they can try out different communities, their job may take them from place to place, and so people have become much more liberated around what housing looks like and what the tenure of housing looks like.”
Black is white. War is peace. You’ll own nothing and be happy.
She continued, suggesting that municipalities need to get with the times and provide different accommodations than were available in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, i.e., gear things more towards renting rather than owning.
“As municipalities, we haven’t kept pace with that change. We’re still stuck in the 40s, 50s, and 60s,” Gondek said.
Conservative MP expresses her disgust over Gondek’s statements
Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner expressed her disgust over these statements, pointing out Gondek’s profound disconnect with reality and the fact that most people would own a home rather than rent if they could afford to do so.
“If this isn’t a deepfake, this is a perpetuation of a dangerous myth that most renters are renters by choice and have disposable income to travel and the capacity to uproot their residence for work,” Garner wrote in an X post.
Gondek, who is currently facing demands to resign issued by tens of thousands of Calgarians, has yet to respond to this or confirm or deny whether her startling statements were, in fact, a deepfake.
