The NDP is pressuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to mass import migrants from Palestine even though countries neighbouring the Gaza Strip have refused to let in refugees fleeing the Israel-Hamas War from the region due to concerns about terrorism.
NDP MPs, Matthew Green and Jenny Kwan, held a press conference on Monday urging the Canadian government to implement special immigration measures.
“The purpose of our press conference is to call for the Liberal government to immediately enact special immigration measures to facilitate the evacuation of extended family members of Canadians and permanent residents in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis worsens there,” said Green.
Green has been spotted at recent anti-Israel protests throughout Canada.
The call comes as the temporary ceasefire has concluded, and military operations, including bombings, have resumed in retaliation to Hamas’ horrific Oct. 7 attack on innocent Israeli civilians.
Neighbouring countries refuse to take in Gaza refugees
Neighbouring countries, Egypt and Jordan, have so far firmly declined to accept refugees from Palestine.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt made strong statements, asserting that the current could risk sparking a refugee crisis.
He warned that this could have severe implications for regional peace.
Similarly, King Abdullah II of Jordan echoed a similar sentiment, stating unequivocally, “No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt.”
President el-Sissi also highlighted the potential security risks, expressing fears that a mass exodus might bring militants into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, posing a threat to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
“(Egypt) would become a base for attacks on Israel. Israel would have the right to defend itself … and would strike Egyptian territory,” warned el-Sissi.
“The peace which we have achieved would vanish from our hands.”
Jordan, too, cited similar security concerns, fearing that an influx of refugees could destabilize the region.
