Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Pierre Poilievre of wanting to make marijuana illegal again during an exchange in the House of Commons, amid debate over a 25% tariff threat from US President-elect Donald Trump.

Trudeau accuses Poilievre of seeking to make marijuana illegal

The US President-elect, who takes office in less than two months, made a post to Truth Social on Monday night, threatening drastic economic punishment if Canada and Mexico don’t take action to tighten their borders and the flow of illegal drugs and migrants to the states.

The Conservative leader on Tuesday told Trudeau that his “disastrous legalization and liberation of drugs has the Americans worried.”

The Prime Minister responded, saying, he’s taken action on drugs, and “If the leader of the opposition is suggesting he wants to re-criminalize marijuana then let him just say that.”

Canada has experienced an uptick in the illicit drug market in recent years, on top of the Liberals investing in controversial “Safe supply” policies.

Last month, the RCMP charged Gaganpreet Randhawa in connection with what is now recognized as the largest illegal drug bust in Canadian history. Police seized over 500 kilograms of illegal drugs, including 54 kilograms of fentanyl.

And just last week, truck driver Sukhraj Singh, 22, of Caledon, was arrested last week by Michigan State Police, with 123 pounds of cocaine seized.
