Just fourteen months after a proudly socialist café opened in Toronto — and allowed customers not to pay — The Anarchist coffee shop has run out of money and will be closing its doors for good.
The brave business model allowed customers to pay money if they could — but it wasn’t required.
The business owner Gabriel Sims-Fewer blamed capitalism for his socialist snafu.
“Sadly, The Anarchist will be closing its doors on May 30th,” he wrote.
“Unfortunately, the lack of generational wealth/seed capital from ethically bankrupt sources left me unable to weather the quiet winter season, or to grow in the ways needed to be sustainable longer-term,” he added.
The cafe owner and branding was dripping with far-left politics, including antifa-sympathizing slogans like Cops are Pigs and ACAB (all cops are bastards). He also sold merchandise, including stickers that said RIOT and DEFUND THE POLICE and EAT THE RICH.
One T-Shirt read “People over profit,” and a shopping handbag read “Reproductive Justice for All Genders.”
The cafe regularly made social media posts on instagram with absurd hashtags.
One post from April 16 talks about “settlers” in Canada committing an “ongoing genocide.”

Despite the news release, Sims-Fewer calls the business a “huge success.” He said his next project will be just as exciting.
He concluded his update with “Fuck the rich. Fuck the police. Fuck the state. Fuck the colonial death camp we call ‘Canada.’”
Socialist and communist sympathizers are a vocal group across the country. Last week, a United Conservative Party announcement was crashed by protesters whose social media accounts are littered with communist, antifa, and New Democrat Party (NDP) support.
