Trudeau’s former advisor and long time pal Gerald Butts is blaming climate change for the forest fires that were started by arsonists across Canada.
Butts, along with several Liberal MPs, regularly connects the forest fires in Canada to man-made climate change.
One Twitter user asked Butts to comment on the fact that a man in Alberta was arrested last month for intentionally starting at least 10 fires around Cold Lake.
Butts responded by calling the user a “climate denier.”
“The fires are worse because of the conditions in the forest,” Butts said.
“The conditions are caused by climate change.”
With Canada facing a huge uptick in forest fires compared to what’s usual for this time of year, many are skeptical of Butts’ claim that all forest fires — even those intentionally or accidentally set by humans — are the result of climate change.
RCMP in Nova Scotia noted that at least three recent fires were intentionally set, and the province increased the fine for violating its burn ban to $25,000.
On top of the arrest by Alberta RCMP last month for 10 arson cases, in 2021, a different woman was charged with 32 counts of arson in central and northern Alberta. Police charged Audrey Elaine Dunham after an “in-depth investigation into a series of suspicious wildfires in the Bonnyville and Lac La Biche areas.”
And last week, a 28-year-old homeless woman was arrested in British Columbia for starting a string of wildfires.
Windy.com shows that Canada is currently dealing with way more intense forest fires than the US.
Alberta’s official wildfire status data shows that at least half of the current wildfires in the province were started by humans (intentionally or accidentally).
On Tuesday, People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier said “It’s not climate change. It’s more likely green terrorism.”
