To address British Columbia’s out-of-control housing costs, BC Conservative leader John Rustand has introduced a plan that would exempt up to $3,000 per month in housing costs from provincial income taxes for renters and homeowners.
If elected next month, Rustand said his rebate would start from $1,500 per month in Budget 2026 and increase by $500 annually until it gets to $3,000 per month.
“The 2026 budget impact will not exceed $900 million, and we will design a targeted tax credit that ensures the relief goes to people who need it to get ahead in life,” he said.
Rustad further criticized NDP Premier David Eby for failing to deliver on housing relief.
“In 2017, David Eby and the NDP promised a $400 rent rebate for all renters, regardless of income. As usual, they broke that promise not once, but twice,” said Rustad.
He added, “When they finally introduced it in 2023, it was so severely income-tested that the average family in Vancouver can’t qualify.”
Eby flip flops on carbon tax
Last week, BC Premier David Eby made a dramatic U-turn on the carbon tax, just eleven months after pledging he would never back down from it.
His comments mark a complete reversal of his long-standing position that, even if the Trudeau Liberals scrapped their carbon levy, B.C. would retain its own.
According to 338Canada, Eby’s NDP and Rustad’s Conservatives are both polling at 44%, as of Saturday, September 21.
