US President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, just three and a half months before the election.
The 81-year-old president had faced mounting pressure from within his own party due to his declining cognitive abilities, illustrated virtually every time he walks and speaks.
Biden’s announcement comes after weeks of speculation and growing unease among Democrats following his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.
In a statement released on X, the US President said “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.“
Minutes following his announcement, Biden gave Vice President Kamala Harris “full support” to be the Democrat nominee in his place.
The president’s difficulty in recalling names and mixing up of people during public appearances had become increasingly apparent. Last week, Biden forgot his Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, instead referring to him as “the black guy.” The week prior, the US President accidentally referred to Ukrainian President Zelensky as President Putin.
The decision follows discussions with top Democratic officials, including Rep. Adam Schiff, Rep. Jim Costa, Rep. Jamie Raskin, as well as many high profile Democrat-supporting figures such as George Clooney, Rob Reiner, Stephen King, and media personality Joe Scarborough.
Former President Barack Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi were also reported to have urged Biden to reconsider his candidacy.
Biden’s withdrawal has set in motion a rapid succession process within the Democratic Party. Vice President Kamala Harris is widely seen as the frontrunner to replace him on the ticket.
