Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that the UCP will be introducing legislation that would amend the Bill of Rights and protect Albertans from medical discrimination such as vaccine passports.
Smith broke the news through social media, saying the legislative amendment is meant “to reinforce the rights for every Albertan to make their own choices regarding the medical choices that they receive.”
Smith added that, “Albertans will have a right to decide whether or not they receive a vaccination, or another medical procedure.”
The amendment will be debated this fall in the Alberta legislature, which resumes on October 28.
The Premier ran on advancing medical freedom during her campaign in May of 2022. Since then, a number of right-leaning critics have lamented over what felt like a lack of action on the issue.
In her announcement, Smith also introduced plans to strengthen property rights and gun rights.
“We’re sending a clear message that in Alberta, the rights of individuals are paramount, and that government must respect those rights at every turn,” she concluded.
Since becoming elected, Premier Smith has also fired the entire AHS board of directors, as well as Alberta’s then-Chief Medical Officer of Health, Deena Hinshaw.
