After voting against three non-confidence motions proposed by Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is now saying he’ll propose one himself.
“Justin Trudeau failed in the biggest job a Prime Minister has: to work for people, not the powerful,” he stated on social media. “The NDP will vote to bring this government down, and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government who will work for them.”
The House of Commons is currently adjourned for the holidays, and is scheduled to resume sitting on Monday, January 27, 2025.
Speculation has been rampant that Trudeau is on the verge of resigning. The Prime Minister is reportedly “reflecting” on whether or not to resign amid party turmoil, with ministers jumping ship left and right, and his Finance Minister publicly accusing him of “costly political gimmicks.”
Singh’s letter, after backing Trudeau every step of the way by protecting him from non-confidence votes, signals that Trudeau’s time is likely about to come to an end.
However, the House of Commons is currently on holiday break, resuming January 27, 2025. The Liberals have the ability to prevent non-confidence motions until late February.
Conveniently, Singh’s pension kicks in February 25.
