Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek’s approval rating is at a dismal 36%, compared to a 55% disapproval rating.
According to ThinkHQ, only one in 10 Calgarians strongly approve of Mayor Gondek, and 26% somewhat approve.
On the other hand, 40% of Calgarians strongly disapprove of the job that Gondek is doing as mayor — and another 15% somewhat disapprove.
These numbers are virtually identical to what they were last year: in November 2022, Gondek had a 35% approval and 55% disapproval rating.
The polling firm found that women were slightly more favourable toward Gondek than men.
“Mayor Gondek has struggled since being elected in October 2021 and has not gained any significant ground with voters regarding their ratings of her performance,” stated the Alberta-based public affairs and communication firm ThinkHQ.
“Her approval/disapproval has held in negative territory for almost the entirety of her term, and if that stubborn trend were to continue, her prospects for re-election are fairly bleak.”
The Calgary mayor and council are almost at the halfway point of their term.
The survey further revealed that 42% of Calgarians approve of their councillors, while 39% disapprove. These ratings are just slightly better than ThinkHQ’s last poll in Fall 2022.
Earlier this year, Mayor Gondek brought into effect a radical law that banned protesting drag queen events that target children.
Those found violating Gondek’s decree could face a $500 fine for simply protesting the grooming of children.
Following her 2021 Calgary mayoral election win, Gondek’s first order of business was declaring a climate emergency (cue the eyerolls).
