Just as the United States prepared to impose new tariffs on Canada’s economy, Liberal MP Lisa Hepfner joined Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault to announce a $41.5 million taxpayer-funded initiative supporting 106 different projects aimed at “advancing equality” for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Canadian government sends nearly $42 million tax dollars to 2SLBTQI+ organizations on the eve of US tariffs

Notably, the U.S. no longer recognizes the expanded LGBTQ terminology and now uses “LGB” on government websites, following former President Donald Trump’s executive order recognizing only two genders: male and female.

Today, President Trump officially imposed tariffs of 25% on multiple Canadian industries and 10% on oil and gas.

These tariffs mark yet another economic setback for Canada, as high inflation, the carbon tax, and growing deficits already weigh heavily on Canadian households.

While Ottawa is expected to allocate substantial funding toward counter-tariff responses and social welfare programs to mitigate the economic damage, 2SLGBTQI+ organizations have managed to secure millions in funding—at a time when many Canadians may question the priority of such spending.

Trump stated that he is not seeking concessions from Canada regarding these tariffs and has suggested he may increase them further in the future.

His rhetoric aligns with his broader strategy of economic pressure on Canada, which he believes could influence border security policies or even discussions about territorial annexation.
