A new report suggests Canadians predominantly hold anti-woke positions on transgender topics — and significantly oppose the radical trans activist stances that the majority of politicians currently espouse.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute released a report on Thursday that delves into various culture-wars, including several hot-button questions surrounding transgender issues.
The report includes survey responses from 1,503 adults nationwide.
Gender ideology gets a reality check
- Despite gender ideology claiming that gender identity has nothing to do with biological sex, a mere 15% of respondents said they believe “there’s no such thing as biological sex, only gender preference.”
- Only 20% said they support gender reassignment surgery for minors under 16.
- A vast majority, nearly 75%, said they think there is an excessive focus on transgenderism.
- Over two-thirds of respondents believe parents should be notified about their child’s change in pronouns, a policy currently enacted in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan — and very soon, Alberta.
- About two-thirds oppose trans women competing in women’s sports
- Two-thirds also think that the bizarre Kayla Lemieux teacher who wore massive prosthetic breasts shouldn’t have been allow to teach
- A slight majority of Canadians disapprove of putting pronouns in bios
Interestingly, the poll also found that visual imagery persuaded the woke-leaning to change their perspectives. For example, when answering about the Oakville teacher who wore size 7 prosthetic breasts, most said that they were okay with it. However, when shown a picture of what that actually entailed, “respondents opposed Lemieux’s right to teach with them 75-11.”
Political beliefs were also found to be a significant predictor of opinions on transgender issues, with right-wing voters almost twice as likely as left-wing voters to oppose transwomen in women’s sports.
Yet, even among left-wing voters, there is notable opposition to some trans activist viewpoints.
Age also plays a role in viewpoints, with younger respondents showing more support for trans activist positions, especially regarding youth liberties like gender reassignment surgery for minors and parental notification of pronoun changes.
Language and being part of a sexual minority are other factors that influence opinions, with sexual minorities showing more support for trans activist positions.
Social media usage also correlates with trans activist attitudes, suggesting its role in shaping young people’s opinions on transgender issues.
The results suggest that, despite the outrage from far-left trans activists, it’s politically wise to support policies like those that Premier Smith recently announced.
