Alberta Premier Danielle Smith showed support by retweeting Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s February 8th campaign video that calls on the federal government to appoint a fentanyl czar.
In his video, Ford said it’s been five days since the US tariffs were paused and Canada was given a thirty day period to roll out its border security plan along with Mexico.
Ford’s government announced “operation deterrence” back on January 7th, which is the province’s call for enhanced border security between Ontario and the United States.
Ford said that the operation has thus far resulted in the capture of 21 illegal firearms, 624 kilograms of cocaine, 7 stolen vehicles and 8 illegal border crossers.
Ford called an early election last month that takes place on February 27. Polls show his Progressive Conservative government is far ahead of his opponents.
His early election focus has been on protecting Ontario from tariffs. While tariffs from the US have yet to come to fruition, Ford has since refocused his approach of cozying up to Trudeau, opting to instead pressure the federal government to fulfill its commitments to securing the border.
Ford’s realignment strategy has put him on the side of Canada’s most conservative Premier Danielle Smith, who has increased in popularity since ditching the “Team Canada”, anti-US approach of virtually every other premier when facing the early Trump tariff threats in January.
