Alberta Premier Danielle Smith extended the Fuel Tax Relief for Albertans on Monday, noting that she’s following through with her election campaign promise.
“We are committed to keeping life affordable for Alberta families,” Smith said.
“Saving Albertans money when they fill up is Step 1 of this commitment. We will work every day to ensure that Alberta families can put more of their hard-earned money toward their essential needs.”
The United Conservative Party leader further said the relief should provide between $6 and $18 of savings every time they fill up at the pump.
Smith said the relief will further help small businesses that rely on fuel to provide goods and services.
On a related note, reporters asked Smith about her scheduled meeting later in the day with Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, where the leaders are expected to discuss Alberta’s Emissions Reductions plan.
Last week, Smith said that if the federal Sustainable Jobs Act council recommends anything inconsistent or interferes with Alberta’s plan Emissions Reduction plan, “Alberta will not recognize the legitimacy of those recommendations in any manner.”
Smith reiterated this position on Monday.
“There is no way we will agree to shutting down our oil and natural gas industry or phasing out our oil and natural gas workers. It’s not going to happen,” she said.
Smith recently hinted she’ll use the Sovereignty Act if needed to stop the Trudeau Liberals from interfering with Alberta’s energy transition plan.
