Prominent Democrat representatives are being accused of faking being handcuffed while at an abortion protest in Washington, DC.
Videos of Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez show the two being escorted by officers with their hands behind the back as if they were wearing handcuffs.
In a tweet about the incident, Omar claimed she was “arrested” by police for protesting the overturning of Roe v Wade.
“Today, I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!” tweeted Omar.
Several people in the replies observed that Omar was walking by herself away from an officer, and no handcuffs could be seen despite her hands being behind her back.
“Why are you pretending to be handcuffed? This is so weird,” tweeted Republican commentator Matt Whitlock.
Another video of Ocasio-Cortez being led away by a police officer also shows her with her hands behind her back. However, after a few seconds, Ocasio-Cortez can be seen waving with one hand at a supporter.
“Today, Rep. AOC was arrested along with other members of Congress outside the Supreme Court for protesting in support of abortion rights.”
According to reports, at least 16 Democrat lawmakers were taken into custody during the incident for various charges, including “crowding, obstructing or incommoding.”
The abortion protest was in response to the recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in a historic 5-4 decision; a later ruling affirmed that the US Consitution “does not confer a right to abortion.”
