A massive convoy of Dutch farmers has arrived in the left-wing city of Nijmegen, likely to the vexation of locals.
News videos show the convoy arriving in the city and attempting to shut down a major intersection as farmers and truckers blaring horns resound throughout the streets.
The most voted-for party in the Dutch 2022 municipal elections in Nijmegen was the GroenLinks (GreenLeft), a radical environmentalist political party that came out of an amalgamation of three communist/socialist parties and, curiously, an evangelical one.
Moreover, the party openly supports the nitrogen emissions cap policy that farmers are currently fighting, and the farmers’ presence in their stronghold is unlikely a welcome sight.
“Much of what GroenLinks has been advocating for 30 years when it comes to nature and nitrogen was announced today by the Cabinet,” said GorenLinks representative Laura Bromet last month.
Conversely, the right-wing Party for Freedom has absolutely condemned the policy, with leader Geert Wilders saying, “Our farmers and our food supply are going down” because of the policy, while the leader of the Farmer-Citizen Movement, Caroline van der Plas, said the policy was “inhumane” and “without perspective.”
Meanwhile, new demonstrations are being held by Dutch-German convoys along the A7 motorway — not to mention that the movement has spread to farmers in Italy, Germany, and Poland, which saw demonstrations earlier in the day.
It’s uncertain what the Rutte government plans to do to quell the Dutch Uprising now that it’s gaining international attention and inspiring those around the continent. Only time will tell, but it doesn’t look like things will slow down anytime soon.
