Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney recently addressed their new “Days of Girlhood” song, and blamed being transgender for the criticism.
Last week, Mulvaney released a song called “Days of Girlhood” where the influencer strived to capture the raw moments of what it’s been like being a girl.
The viral song talks about struggling to get out of bed, picking up medication, overspending when shopping, walks of shame after one-night stands, and flirting with men for free drinks.
Many women online accused Mulvaney of being misogynistic and mocking women.
In response, Mulvaney spoke out on Sunday calling the lyrics “dumb” in a TikTok video, saying “this was a fun project to celebrate the early days of transition.”
“If a cis pop star came out with one of those songs, I don’t think it would have had this negative of response,” Mulvaney added.
Mulvaney further said: “I think we as a society are trying to figure out right now, what are trans people entitled to speak or sing about when it comes to identity and women…and why does it make us feel so uncomfortable when they do things that every other cis person is doing.”
Women’s response to “Days of Girlhood”
Mulvaney’s portrayal of women was mocked by several social media users.
One TikTok user, Raja wrote “Dylan Mulvaney, if you were actually a woman, you would understand that it’s more than one night stands, going to therapy, popping pills, walks of shame, and shopping. Stop mocking women.”
Another by the name of Haley Jo Klein said “ the song talks girlhood up to woman being nothing more than lazy, prescription popping, drunk, sex-crazed shopping addicts. If you don’t see that you’re leading the wrong fight.”
The video created by Klein has almost one million likes on TikTok.
Mulvaney mentioned that 100% of the profits from “Days of Girlhood” will be donated to The Trevor Project, which provides crisis services to queer youth.
“So even when the transphobes stream the song, that money goes to queer kids.”
