Green Party leader Elizabeth May expressed her dismay over the fact that a climate activist has been deported from Canada.

Elizabeth May outraged over deportation of Pakistani climate activist

May took to social media after a Pakistani student Zain Haq was sent packing on Sunday.

“Zain Haq is my friend. I am in awe of his moral courage” May said. “Today Canada failed a beautiful couple- Canadian Sophie and her husband Zain.”

The Green leader further said that Haq is being deported “for protecting old growth forests and climate.”

Haq, who participated in illegal blockades in British Columbia over climate change, boarded a flight in Toronto headed for his native Pakistan. Haq tried to convince Liberal ministers to intervene on his behalf, to no avail.

Haq said he is looking forward to eating Pakistani food and seeing his family when he arrives home. His Canadian wife, meanwhile, is planning to travel to Pakistan to join him.  He said Canada’s ‘unethical’ for deporting him.

In 2023, Haq pleaded guilty to mischief charges for illegally blockading Metro Vancouver roads.

His wife plans on using the out-of-country spousal sponsorship path on humanitarian and compassionate grounds in order to get back into Canada and fight for residency.

BC conservative leader, John Rustad, clapped back on May’s tweet by saying that “I’m sick and tired of woke traitorous politicians fighting for ‘students’ like Zain who commit crimes.”
