- Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to a Toronto med school’s decision to reserve 70 of their 94 seats in a medical program for “equity deserving groups”
- The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) also announced they were abolishing their MCAT prerequisite
- Ford is demanding TMU accept students based on merit, not race
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has responded to public backlash over a Toronto medical school’s plan to reserve 75% of the seats for non-White applicants by demanding they select individuals “regardless of their race.”
The Toronto Metropolitan University’s new medical school announced last month that they will accept a majority of students based not on merit but their skin tone, ancestry, or sexual orientation. Of the 94 sports in the medical program, they’re reserving 70 of themfor Black, Indigenous, and “Equity-deserving groups.” These include LGBT-identifying and lower-income individuals.
Moreover, to ensure they’re able to fill these quotas, TMU announced that they abolished their MCAT prerequisite to make it easier to qualify for admission.
“The government has spoken to TMU about their equity admissions,” said Grace Lee, Premier Ford’s director of media relations, as reported by The National Post.
Ms. Lee added that “Medical schools must ensure that qualified individuals fill these seats, regardless of their race or background.”
Ironically, the DEI policies are implemented through what is referred to in far-left circles as an “anti-racism lens.”
Last week, Premier Doug Ford said he’s going to ban foreign students from medical schools starting in the fall of 2026. Premier Ford said the bar on international students will ensure most med school grads will stay in Ontario, where 12% of citizens are without a family doctor.
