Two Greenpeace activists have been arrested after protesting in front of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s home by chaining themselves to a fake oil-extraction equipment prop that blocked access to and from his residence.
One of the activists, Keith Stewart—Greenpeace Canada’s senior energy strategist— boasted about his stunt on social media afterwards.
“Not going gently into that dark night of Trump-lite in Canada. I’m currently chained to a replica oil jack blocking Pierre Poilievre’s driveway, calling him out for protecting polluters over people,” he said on X.
Stewart also released a media statement: “While I am being arrested, Poilievre is planning to give free passes to big polluters like oil and gas, securing more profits for the richest at the expense of Canadians’ futures.”
Greenpeace communications campaigner Laura Bergamo said that Stewart and his accomplice, Trevor Cluthé, were charged with mischief and intimidation.
The incident echoes what Canada’s Environment Minister and former Greenpace activist himself once did in Alberta. In 2002, Stephen Guilbeault trespassed onto then-Premier Ralph Klein’s house and installed solar panels onto his roof while his wife was home.
Stewart, who regularly retweets statements made by Minister Guilbeault, is followed by the Environment Minister on X, as well as former Environment Minister Catherine McKenna.
