Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was ratioed by social media users after he expressed his support of freedom of press on World Press Freedom Day.
Trudeau tweeted his statement on Wednesday morning.
“Journalists inform Canadians and hold governments accountable,” Trudeau said.
“Their work is independent and indispensable. As they continue to face harassment, censorship, and violence simply for doing their jobs, let me say this: We’ll always support and promote the freedom of the press.”
More people responded to his tweet than liked it.
One respondent, Alexandra Lavoie from Rebel News, said “hope you are kidding @Justintrudeau.”
Lavoie attached a video with her comment that captured her interaction with Trudeau during the 2021 election. Trudeau had tried to prevent Rebel News from asking questions in 2019 and 2021, but both times a federal judge overruled the ban.
However, Trudeau refused to answer her question.
Another user replied to Trudeau, “I thought this was a parody account for a moment.”
“Justin’s apparently not aware that he’s the villain in this story. It’s time to switch governments,” replied James Dueck.
“This is the most antithetical tweet I’ve read this morning. I deal w\ Canadian media regularly and its overall bias is staggering,” said CEO and Executive Director at the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, Rod Giltaca.
“Pure bullshit coming from you,” said Western Standard journalist Cory Morgan.
Within three hours after Trudeau’s tweet, there were twice as many replies as there were ‘likes’.
Hours after Censorship Bill C-11 passed last week, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer said Trudeau “bought media and is shutting down dissent.”
