The City of Calgary released a statement on Monday.

“A striking feature of the building is the central structure with a textured flame motif that emulates a home fire, which is further amplified when it is lit at night,” it reads.

The Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) are expected to provide further details on their new 18,000-seat arena, designed to replace the aging Scotiabank Saddledome.

The project, which includes public plazas, a community rink, and an attached parkade, comes with a price tag of $926.4 million. A significant portion of this, over $850 million, will be funded by the municipal government.

The CSEC will provide $40 million upfront and make annual payments starting at $17 million, increasing by one percent annually.

The design of the new event center is said to be inspired by the ancestral and historical lands of Indigenous Peoples, incorporating elements of fire, ice, land, and air.

The 10-acre city block will feature community and connection spaces, including a community rink, indoor and outdoor plaza areas, four restaurants, and the Calgary Flames Team Store.

Additionally, there are plans for future development opportunities in the northeast corner of the site, aiming to serve the 8,000 new residents expected in the downtown neighbourhood.

Premier Danielle Smith said the arena will revitalize the city, attract more events, and create jobs.

A development permit application for the event center was submitted on July 19.

This is long over due. Both Nenshi and Gondek were non supporters of the new arena. Danielle Smith is the person we can thank for getting the project all approved. This new project will be excellent for Calgary. And even for people who don’t like sports, just go and look at the Ice district in Edmonton. The Ice District has revitalized Edmonton’s down down. The Money Edmonton spent on the arena has already been paid back to them in tax revenue. The Calgary arena and area projects is copying what Edmonton did. I can’t wait to see it all when it is completed.
