Following the highly anticipated Liberal caucus meeting, MPs were vague as to the future of their leader, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“It’s Trudeau’s decision,” said Etobicoke MP, Yvan Baker.
“You can ask him when he comes out,” said Beaches-East York’s Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.
“This is going to be a choice between Pierre Poiliever and probably Justin Trudeau, the Liberal leader,” he added.
“The Prime Minister is the man who is in charge and he will make whatever decision he feels right,” another said.
The Trudeau Liberals’ comments followed Wednesday morning’s caucus meeting, in what was supposedly an open mic cabinet session. As many as forty MPs were reportedly prepared to demand new leadership during the event.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller said it was a good conversation, noting that there’s still more to “sort out.”
“Strong and united”
Trudeau said the Liberals were “strong and united” following the meeting, and it’s notable that during Question Period in the House of Commons, which followed the meeting, the Prime Minister was given a rousing standing ovation from his MPs.
While most the identities of the majority of the Liberals demanding Trudeau resign remain anonymous, four members have publicly stated they think he should step down.
Wayne Long from New Brunswick, Alexandra Mendès from Quebec, Newfoundland’s Ken McDonald, and PEI’s Sean Casey have gone on the record with their belief that it’s time for Trudeau to step down.
The Trudeau Liberals are polling terribly compared to the Conservatives. The 9-year and three-time elected PM has vowed to continue on as the party leader into his fourth election, slated for October 2025, despite abysmal polling numbers, including one that indicates the majority of Canadians want him to resign.
