A reporter asked Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday whether he would consider amending the Safe Third Country Agreement to accommodate transgender individuals. In response, the NDP leader said he would look into it.
A potential amendment to the Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the U.S. for transgender individuals would mean that Canada would no longer classify the U.S. as a safe country for trans people.
This change could allow transgender individuals to claim refugee status in Canada, despite the U.S. being widely considered a safe country.
This discussion comes as President Trump signed an executive order defining male and female as the only two recognized genders under U.S. federal policy.
Meanwhile, during an interview with CP24, a journalist asked Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre how many genders he recognizes. Poilievre responded, “I’m only aware of men and women.”
This led to an exchange in which Poilievre criticized the journalist’s priorities, highlighting the ongoing crime surge and Canada’s cost of living crisis as more pressing issues.
Poilievre concluded by stating, “We should have a government that just minds its own damn business and leaves people alone.”
Currently, the Canadian federal government allows for the term “X” on passports to represent non-binary or other gender identities. However, the government itself acknowledges that many countries do not recognize or accept this designation.
