After 6 years of waiting and over 3 years of propping up the Liberal government, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has finally qualified for his taxpayer-funded pension.

Lifetime pensions are guaranteed for MPs who serve for six years.
Singh’s prolonged political career was guaranteed when he agreed to prop up the Liberals through a Supply and Confidence agreement, which protected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from confidence votes in exchange for their support behind some of the NDP’s priorities like dental care.

Singh continued to protect Trudeau from non-confidence after he claimed to “rip up” this agreement.
If Singh were to claim his pension early, then he could receive $2.3 million by the time he hits 90 years old.
When he was first elected as an MP, he made a base salary of $178,900, and a leadership top up totalling around $255,000.
MP salaries have risen, and Singh has earned over $1.5 million since first getting elected in 2019.
During his time as a provincial MPP for nearly six years, he made over $700,000. However provincial members of parliament no longer receive pension plans.
Singh was recently seen hopping into a Maserati and is regularly photographed carrying high-end accessories like Versace tote bags.
The federal Conservatives have seized on Singh’s hypocrisy, launching attack ads that call the NDP leader “Sellout Singh”. This was later deemed racist by some, so the Conservatives started calling him “Sellout Jagmeet Singh.”
Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney recently hinted at a possible early election should he become the next leader of the party on March 9th.
Whenever it comes, Jagmeet Singh’s political career as MP for Burnaby South may finally come to an end, with polling suggesting he might finish in third behind both Liberals and Conservatives.
