On April 4, pro-lockdown Alberta Health Services (AHS) CEO Verna Yiu was fired.
“The Alberta Health Services Board today announced the departure of Dr. Verna Yiu and the launch of a search process for a new President and CEO as the healthcare system shifts to pandemic recovery and renewal… The AHS Board will appoint an interim President and CEO shortly to ensure the organization has leadership and stability. A search committee was formed several months ago, and the group has started a search process,” an Alberta Health Services news release reads.
This news comes after a tumultuous final year in office, during which Albertan doctors sued Yiu, and many AHS employees quit over the vaccine mandate, which Yiu, of course, supported.
Moreover, her abrupt firing signals a shakeup of AHS and punishment for actions taken by bloated bureaucracies during the pandemic. It was Verna Yiu, not Chief Medical Officer Deena Hinshaw, who was responsible for dispatching Health Officers to close down non-compliant Albertan businesses.
Notably, it was also Yiu who brushed the concerns of those who quit to the side, saying the fact that many complied out of fear of losing their job was proof of support for mandatory vaccination.
“So overall, this tells us that there’s very broad support for the mandatory vaccine policy. These are impressive numbers, and we’re extremely grateful to all of those who have submitted their proof of vaccination. We stand by the policy, and it will be fully implemented,” Yiu said in October 2021.
It isn’t clear how many of the roughly 1,200 exemption requests for religious and medical reasons were granted under Yiu, if any have received compensation for their de facto firing for refusing to comply, or if any have been given their jobs back after many restrictions in the province were lifted.
For aiding in the implementation of discriminatory restrictions during the pandemic, Yiu was paid an annual salary of $573,841.
