Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre claims that Liberal MPs are talking behind their leader’s back, claiming that they are being silenced, and won’t be able to speak during Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.
The Trudeau Liberals are meeting on Wednesday in what’s supposedly an open mic cabinet session. As many as forty MPs are reportedly prepared to demand new leadership during the event.
In the House of Commons on Tuesday, Poilievre said that some Liberal MPs “are coming and talking to us, and saying that they’re not allowed to talk to him.”
Several pundits have expressed doubt that a minority of the 157 Liberal MPs will have the power to change anything, given that the majority still claim to support their leader.
While just 20% of caucus members are needed to initiate an internal leadership review—as the Conservatives did to Erin O’Toole in 2022—a majority vote is required to oust the leader.
However, with more and more MPs speaking out in an effort to save their jobs—and save the party from being annihilated in the next election—it’s possible that disgruntled Liberal MPs could create a public crisis for the Liberals.
Liberals speak out
While the identities of the majority of the Liberals demanding Trudeau resign remain anonymous, three members have publicly stated they think he should step down.
Wayne Long from New Brunswick, Alexandra Mendès from Quebec, and PEI’s Sean Casey have gone on the record with their belief that it’s time for Trudeau to step down.
“The people who I represent have tuned him out, they’ve had enough, they want change,” Casey said. “They don’t want the change that is represented by Poilievre and they really, really want another option.”
The Trudeau Liberals are polling terribly compared to the Conservatives. The 9-year and three-time elected PM has vowed to continue on as the party leader into his fourth election, slated for October 2025, despite abysmal polling numbers, including one that indicates the majority of Canadians want him to resign.
