Liberal MPs are expected to present Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with an official request that he step down immediately.
This upcoming weekend, the disgruntled MPs will present a document to their leader containing 20 to 30 signatures, pleading with Trudeau to resign for the sake of the party.
Following that, during the Liberals’ caucus meeting next Wednesday, the Globe and Mail reports that certain MPs will air their grievances in an open microphone session.
The Trudeau Liberals are polling terribly compared to the Poilievre Conservatives. The 9-year and three-time elected PM has vowed to continue on as the party leader into his fourth election, slated for October 2025, despite abysmal polling numbers, including one that indicates the majority of Canadians want him to resign.
Several pundits have expressed doubt that this strategy will change anything, as the majority of Liberal MPs continue to support Trudeau.
However, with more and more MPs speaking out in an effort to save their jobs—and the party from being annihilated in the next election—it’s possible the sentiment could snowball into a public crisis.
While the identities of the majority of the Liberals demanding Trudeau resign remain anonymous, three members have publicly stated they think he should step down.
Wayne Long from New Brunswick, Alexandra Mendès from Quebec, and PEI’s Sean Casey have gone on the record with their belief that it’s time for Trudeau to step down.
“The people who I represent have tuned him out, they’ve had enough, they want change,” Casey said. “They don’t want the change that is represented by Poilievre and they really, really want another option.”
