The Trudeau Liberals are desperately attempting to distance themselves from the awkward fact that on Wednesday, a senior Hamas terrorist publicly thanked them for their support.
Hamas senior leader Ghazi Hamad specifically thanked Canada after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau diverted from the US position and called for a ceasefire — despite the fact that previous ceasefires between Gaza and Israel were broken by Hamas.
Liberal minister of foreign affairs Mélanie Joly felt the need to inform Canadians that, despite Hamas’s gratitude for their positioning, her party doesn’t support the terrorist organization.
Joly’s denunciation came after she called for a negotiation between Israel and Hamas in November.
Liberal MP Anthony Housefather said he was “disgusted” by the acknowledgement from Hamas. Housefather said that the Hamas leader may be unaware that the Liberals’ call for a ceasefire was contingent on Hamas releasing their hostages and laying down their arms.
Another Liberal MP, Ya’ara Saks, gave a similar response to Housefather, claiming their support for a ceasefire was contingent on Hamas surrendering.
However, the Trudeau Government’s support in the UN for a humanitarian pause did not entail such a provision.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the situation on Thursday while making an announcement in Toronto about housing, issuing a strong condemnation of Hamas.
“Hamas cannot have any role in the future governance of Gaza or in the two state solution we need to build with a secure and free Israel alongside a secure and free Palestinian state,” he said.
Trudeau further said a ceasefire “cannot be conditional.”
“Hamas has to lay down its arms,” he said.
