Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney doubled down on his support for wokeism in an attempt to position himself as the antidote to U.S. President Donald Trump.
“While America engages in a war on woke, Canadians will continue to value inclusiveness,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Beyond DEI, Carney has also expressed support for the Green New Deal and net zero policies (which former British Prime Minister Liz Truss criticized publicly).
Carney’s promise comes one week after the federal Liberals announced a $41.5 million taxpayer-funded initiative supporting 106 different projects aimed at “advancing equality” for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
Meanwhile, wokeism in the U.S. has received major pushback since Trump took office. The 47th U.S. President recently cut funding for the foreign aid agency known as USAID, which had subsidized DEI and gender diversity programs around the world.
Trump also on Wednesday said he will be banning biological men and boys from competing in women’s sports, something Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has also promised to do if elected PM.
The U.S. Department of State website also removed the letter “T” from LGBT, leaving only “LGB” in its advisory section, which informs American travellers about foreign countries’ sexuality-related laws.
