An advertisement for an event in Vancouver concerning youth participation in Pride has been removed from Instagram for violating local laws.
The event, Pushing Pride, organized at the Cowichan Community Centre on Vancouver Island, discussed the negative impacts of the recent LGBT movement on children’s safety, women’s rights, and gay individuals.
The event advertisement stated, “Pride began as a means to advocate for gay rights and acceptance. However, today, the parade, activism, symbols, flags, and messaging have increasingly focused on trans activism.”
“Children are being taught that boys can be girls and girls can be boys; adult entertainment is being offered to kids through Drag Queen Story Hours and more; and women’s safety, interests, and rights have been entirely disregarded,” they added.
An Instagram post advertising the event was removed for certain individuals with Meta stating the upload “goes against local laws.”
Meta, the parent company of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, stated that they received a legal request to restrict the content.
They reviewed it against their policies after conducting legal and human rights assessments.
“When governments believe content on Facebook or Instagram goes against local law, they may ask us to restrict the content. We may also receive court orders to restrict content or reports alleging content is unlawful from non-government entities and members of the public,” they stated.
Organizers of the event say they still don’t know what local law Meta is referring to.
Trans community plans protest against Cowichan Centre
After stating that the event “delegitimizes” transgender individuals, a group called Revolve Cowichan will be organizing a protest against the “hate” and “fascism” they claim will be present at the event.
“We stand up for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, especially youth, who are continually harmed by hateful rhetoric and attempts to claw back their basic fundamental rights,” the organizers said.
Furthermore, the organizers provided “notes on protest safety,” where they encouraged protesters to wear a mask for the duration of the protest.
