12 of Scotland’s 19 transgender inmates self-identified as the opposite sex only “after their date of admission,” the Telegraph reports.
The data was revealed through a freedom of information request.
As of March 1st, 2023, seven of these twelve transgender inmates are biological men serving time in female prisons.
“Of those seven, less than five individuals in our care were recorded as beginning their transition after their date of conviction,” the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said.
However, the SPS is reviewing its policies, and politicians have expressed worry that male criminals might simply be “identifying” as female simply to avoid being in prison with males, or to gain closer access to women.
Last month, double-rapist Adam Graham switched his name to Isla Bryson and declared himself a woman. Subsequently, Bryson was sent to a female prison in Scotland, but public outcry was loud enough to snap common sense into the SPS.
The inmate was then transferred to a male prison.
Since 2018 in Canada, some biological men have been permitted to serve their sentence in female prisons.
Furthermore, 16% of 99 transgender criminals applied to transfer to a prison that matched their “gender identity” that differed from their biological sex, and more than half of them were approved.
88% of those approved were biological males who identified as female.
Data also shows that between December 2017 and March 2020, 91% of “trans women” (biological males) were convicted for violent crimes, compared to 26% of men in prison being convicted for such.
Earlier this month, on International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Trudeau tweeted that “trans women are women.”
