A non-profit CEO that strives to provide clean drinking water to Africans is jealous that the “white male” Mr. Beast got so much attention after he did just that for 500,000 of them.
Saran Kaba Jones, the CEO of Face Africa, said the whole ordeal is a bittersweet one.
“I’ve been doing this for 15 years, but we’ve been struggling to continue the work because funding, awareness, and advocacy all take work,” she said.
Jones’s statement comes after Jimmy Donaldson, known as “Mr. Beast” online, released a video on Saturday showing him in Africa where he said that he was building 100 wells, including in Cameroon, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The new wells will reportedly provide clean drinking water for 500 million Africans, but because Donaldson’s video has been viewed over 50 million times since Saturday — and because he’s white — Jones has mixed emotions.
“Overnight, this person comes along, who happens to be a white male figure with a huge platform, and all of a sudden, he gets all of the attention. It’s kind of frustrating, but it’s also understanding the nature of how the world is.”
Donaldson, who has nearly 500 million followers across social media, has a net worth that’s estimated to be around $500 million.
His 10-minute video also showed him building a bridge across a river, donating supplies to schools, and donating bikes to a village.
Donaldson acknowledged the criticism in a post on X, saying, “I already know I’m gonna get canceled because I uploaded a video helping people, and to be 100% clear, I don’t care.”
He added, “I’m always going to use my channel to help people and try to inspire my audience to do the same.”
