Trudeau skips elections, appoints Alberta fangirl as Senator

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Trudeau has announced he is skipping Alberta’s senatorial elections and simply appointing Karen Sorensen – a longtime friend of his – to Canada’s upper chamber.

Alberta was set to vote on the province’s choice for the Senate in October, alongside two referendums and the provincewide municipal elections. That democratic process was not to the liking of Canada’s head of government.

The newest Alberta senator also seems to be good friends with Minister Catherine McKenna – although Banff is not known for it’s canine cuisine, McKenna stopped by for a day with her friend.

Sorensen was appointed alongside four others from across the country. David Arnot, Michele Audette, Amina Gerba and Clement Gignac are the other appointments.

According to Trudeau’s State Broadcaster, “The senators were recommended by the independent advisory board for Senate appointments, and chosen using a merit-based process open to all Canadians.”

It is not clear how the independent advisory board managed to accidentally choose one of Trudeau’s only fans in Alberta.
