What was intended to be a major campaign stop in Surrey, British Columbia for Premier David Eby turned into a spectacle of voters showing their disapproval of the governing BC NDP.
On Sunday, while Eby was speaking inside the Aria Banquet Hall, protesters overshadowed Eby’s announcement by chanting, “No more NDP!”
Eby unveiled his party’s promise of a $1,000 tax reduction per taxpayer to provide financial relief to middle-class families. However, the announcement struggled to break through as a large and diverse group of protesters outside the venue made their presence felt.
Workers very frustrated with the current BC NDP government
Protesters included a mix of homeowners, truck drivers, and ride-share operators expressing their frustrations with the current provincial government.
According to reports from Red FM Vancouver, a prominent South Asian community radio station, homeowners protested for fairer tenancy laws, while truck container drivers rallied for better job security.
Uber and Lyft drivers, another prominent group, demanded higher wages, frustrated by the gig economy’s pay structure.
The rally occurred just days after the BC Conservatives introduced their “Rustad Rebate.”
Billed as the province’s largest tax cut in history, BC Conservative leader promised a housing relief plan to offer renters and mortgage holders a tax deduction of up to $3,000 per month by 2029.
If elected the BC Conservatives pledged to begin with an up to $1,500 per month exemption in their first year of office.
