Uncovered intelligence documents sent from the RCMP to Canada’s top spy agency warn of the “realistic possibility” that a terrorist attack takes place targeting Jewish Canadians.
Drawing on recent school shootings at Jewish schools in Toronto and Montreal—and attempted arson at a synagogue in Vancouver—the report includes speaking notes meant for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) director.
“A lone actor attack—inspired by a range of ideological or religious extremism such as neo-Nazism or DAESH [ISIS]—targeting Jewish interests in Canada is a realistic possibility,” reads a July 10 memo, as reported by Global News.
Vanessa Lloyd has been serving as CSIS’s interim director since David Vigneault resigned in July.
The report further touches on numerous accounts of “criminal intimidation, harassment and hate speech targeting Jewish communities in Canada.” It also states an attack would likely involve “unsophisticated weapons and planning.”
A number of anti-Israel protests have taken place since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 citizens.
Amid the increased violence, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said on May 30 that she’s advising schools and places of worship to invest in “shatterproof glass.”
Toronto police announced earlier this week that they’ve made 72 protest-related arrests. Police also arrested a pro-Hamas protester in January for waving a terrorist flag.
