The official signature drive to fire Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek has multiple events this weekend, and has acquired 80 volunteers.
The City of Calgary confirmed the reception of the recall petition against Mayor Gondek on January 30 which runs until April 4.
The petitioner, Landon Johnson, was recently banned from Public Libraries by the city for soliciting signatures.
For Gondek to be forced to resign, 514, 284 signatures are required from Calgary residents, which is about 40% of the population.
How to sign
There are a few ways for Calgary residents to sign the petition.
One way is to go to a signature drive event, such as at City Hall.
“Join us at City Hall (EAST – YES, facing the library) on Saturday, February 24th, at 1pm,” Johnston’s website reads. “This crucial gathering marks another demonstration of efforts to bring change to our city’s leadership. Attendees can sign the petition and register to volunteer, contributing directly to the movement’s momentum. Let your voice be heard and be a part of shaping the future of our community.”
Another way is to travel to a local commissioner’s location, out of the 80 who have volunteered to help collect signatures.
Signatures must be in-person and have a witness. The Commissioners of Oath count as witnesses.
Johnston’s website shows a list of Commissioners who are serving as volunteers to collect signatures and then in various neighbourhoods.
The petition action leverages the 2022 amendments to the Municipal Government Act, permitting the recall of municipal officials through a structured process.
Mayor Gondek’s popularity has notably waned, as highlighted by recent ThinkHQ data
A recent survey conducted among 1,116 Calgarians revealed a mere 30% approval rating for her performance, with a significant 61% expressing disapproval.
