Conservative leadership candidate Roman Baber promised in a recent interview that he would fire Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, on his first day in office if elected Prime Minister.
Speaking to True North’s Andrew Lawton in an interview on Thursday, Baber said that Tam, alongside RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, would get the boot.
“Your competitor in this race, Pierre Poilievre, has ruffled some feathers for saying that he would get in there and fire the Bank of Canada governor, so when you talk about needing a change in management, who are you speaking about?” asked Lawton.
“Well, the RCMP Commissioner certainly comes to mind. Dr. Tam, as I said, I would fire Dr. Tam on day one because I believe our pandemic response was an abject failure. I think that a Prime Minister, whether it’s Pierre or myself, is entitled to replace important roles with personnel who they believe project the vision and ideology. I think that team has failed Canadians,” said Baber.
Lucki is currently in the midst of a scandal involving allegations that she interfered in the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting investigation to further Liberal government gun control policy.
An RCMP superintendent’s notes revealed that Lucki “promised” then-public safety minister Bill Blair that she would immediately reveal what weapons were used in the mass shooting.
According to Baber, Tam and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were to blame for the nationwide lockdowns, which stifled the economy and plunged Canadians into unemployment.
“So the tone emanates from Ottawa even though it’s the provinces that engaged in the response. Justin Trudeau, Theresa Tam… They were the main drivers of this policy, and they also provided the fiscal aid on the other side to encourage provinces,” said Baber.
“I think we need to end this fear-mongering that was coming from all levels of government and get everyone back to work.”
