- Moe wins majority, securing 35 seats at the time of publication
- It’s the 5th consecutive term for the Saskatchewan Party
- It was a closely contested race that some pollsters predicted would tip towards the NDP
Saskatchewan’s election has been called, with Premier Scott Moe narrowly winning another majority government.
Votes are still being counted, but Moe’s Saskatchewan Party has secured 35 seats in the 61-seat legislature, maintaining its base largely in rural areas. 31 seats were needed for a majority.
“I was going to say good evening, but I think I’ll actually say good morning — what a great day to be in Saskatchewan,” Moe told supporters in the early hours on Tuesday.
“We’re going to take a little time and reflect,” Moe said, noting that healthcare and education are areas in need of improvement.
It’s the fifth consecutive term for the Saskatchewan Party, and it will be Moe’s second term.
NDP gains, despite loss
Despite the win for Moe’s party, the province is more split than his previous term. Heading into the 2024 election, the Saskatchewan Party held 42 seats, compared to the NDP representing 14 seats.
The NDP saw significant gains in urban regions like Regina and Saskatoon, where they won a total of 26 seats.
The NDP leader, Carla Beck, said she was disappointed in the results, but claimed she was proud to have “changed the landscape in this province.”
Just prior to the election, Beck said she’s against banning biological boys from being able to change in girls’ change rooms, after Moe pledged to ban such “on day one” of being re-elected.
