Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN) has implemented policies requiring all organ transplant patients to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before doctors operate on them.
Toronto’s UHN represents Canada’s largest transplant centre, and the decision will affect roughly 4,300 Canadians awaiting life-saving care.
Nonetheless, despite a supposed Hippocratic obligation to save lives — vaccinated or otherwise — the UHN decided to trudge along the path towards a medical apartheid state.
“From a medical point of view, we all felt quite strongly that this was needed. So, we’ve been having a lot of discussion on how best to formulate this policy,” said Dr. Atul Humar, director of UHN’s Ajmera Transplant Centre, while speaking to CTV News.
“It was actually a very complex discussion. We had ethical input; we had input from medical leaders and experts in the field.”
According to the UHN’s data, unvaccinated patients may have a 12 per cent higher risk of having an organ rejection during the procedure.
This risk factor apparently supersedes the 100 per cent risk of death if the unvaccinated recipient does not receive their organ transplant.
“Remember, the organ is really a scarce resource,” said Humar. “It’s something donated by another human being. And really, we have to go to all efforts to try to make sure the patient does well, but also that the organ is well cared for.”
This new policy decision comes days after several hospitals in the US announced the same type of policy, including the University of Washington Medical Center and UCHealth.
According to UCHealth communications vice president Dan Weaver, “In almost all situations, transplant recipients and living donors at UCHealth are now required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in addition to meeting other health requirements and receiving additional vaccinations.”

According to both institutions, the unvaccinated will now be removed from waitlists for their operation, even if they have found their own donor.
Such is the case of Leilani Lutali, who found a kidney donor through her church group but was later removed from the hospital’s organ transplant schedule.

Lutali has Stage IV kidney disease, so this refusal to operate effectively means Lutali will die, likely sometime this year, because she refused to take an mRNA vaccine and doctor’s refused to operate.
