The RCMP “K Division” has dispatched the Explosives Disposal Unit to the scene of the Trans Mountain Pipeline after the Crown corporation announced a “suspicious package” was found near the crude oil pipeline.
As per the statement, the pipeline has been completely shut down out of an “abundance of caution,” as per the statement.
According to police, the package found around 1 p.m. was a duffel bag around the Wabamun area of Alberta. The site was not open to the public.
“We have officers who have contained the area. It’s not a public area,” RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said.
The finding comes hours after Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced that the Chairman of the US Senate’s Energy Committee was going to be touring the Alberta oil sands to strengthen cooperation on North American energy security.
