Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s fractured party just took another blow with four cabinet ministers announcing they will not be seeking re-election.
National Revenue Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough, Economic Development for Southern Ontario Minister Filomena Tassi, and Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal have all told the Prime Minister that they will not partake in the next election campaign.
In response, Prime Minister Trudeau is expected to announce yet another cabinet shuffle.
The development comes amid one of the most tumultuous times of Trudeau’s 9-year tenure. On Wednesday, it was reported that a number of Liberal MPs are expected to ask their leader to resign during an open microphone caucus meeting session.
And last month, Trudeau’s national campaign director, Jeremy Broadhurst, abruptly quit, allegedly claiming that he doesn’t believe the Liberals can win the next election.
Trudeau has seen a number of other Liberals quit over the past 12 months. Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan recently announced that he will not seek re-election in the next federal race; Ottawa-based Francis Drouin also announced in June that he’s not planning on seeking re-election; and Trudeau’s former censorship czar, Pablo Rodriquez, quit the Liberals last month to sit as an Independent.
Last year, Trudeau pulled off a massive cabinet shuffle after his polling numbers first started to fall. The shuffle did nothing to help, though, and he continues to remain about 20 points under the Opposition Conservatives.
After last year’s cabinet shuffle, one Liberal MP told the Toronto Star it was like putting “lipstick on a pig.”
Even the mainstream media, Justin’s go-to source for PR defence, is asking the question of when he’ll resign, with the Toronto Star printing headlines like “Justin Trudeau’s political career is over. He can walk away with dignity now or stick around to get creamed by a man he loathes“.
