Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was booed by a sold out crowd at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax while speaking at the North American Indigenous Games opening ceremony.
“Hello my friends” was all it took for the crowd to boo their Prime Minister.
Despite his attempt to smile through the booing, footage reveals the boos were fairly loud, causing Trudeau to pause and gather himself before proceeding.
It’s not the Prime Minister’s first time being booed by Indigenous Canadians.
Last year, on the other side of Canada, Trudeau’s trip to Kamloops, BC, ended in disaster, with a crowd of First Nations calling him a “criminal” and telling him to leave immediately.
Chaos erupted almost as soon as Trudeau arrived at Kamloops, where he was set to make a speech on Indigenous graves.
“Take your disrespect out of our tribe,” First Nations protesters chanted as Trudeau and his armed security detail tried to make their way through the crowd.
Eventually, Trudeau made his way to the stage and gave his speech, which went about as well as you’d expect.
“Today, we’re here to remember the L—” Trudeau began.
“You’re a criminal,” a First Nations protester interjected.
“You’re not welcome here,” First Nations protesters screamed as Trudeau attempted to continue.
Eventually, he was forced to admit the disgust that First Nations had for him.
“I hear your anger towards me. That’s fine,” Trudeau said, slightly shaken. “But I’d ask you to respect your elders, please.”
