Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s last days could be numbered as anonymous Liberal MPs are leaking details to mainstream media of an internal revolt taking place behind his back.
The 9-year and three-time elected PM has vowed to continue on as the party leader into his fourth election, slated for October 2025, despite abysmal polling numbers, including one that indicates the majority of Canadians want him to resign.
On Friday evening, state-broadcaster CBC reported that multiple Liberal sources are secretly signing their names to a document that is effectively an internal non-confidence review.
The Conservatives have proposed two non-confidence motions in the House of Commons since it returned this fall, but both have failed to pass, and neither of them garnered any support from any of the 158 Liberal MPs.
However, behind closed doors, Liberal MPs are reportedly working to rally support. The confidential document has reportedly garnered at least 20 signatures so far, with one source telling the CBC that the list has spilled onto a second page.
All of this is taking place while Trudeau is in Laos with his chief of staff, Katie Telford, as well as Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng.
After reading of the development through the media, Minister Ng told reporters that she’s “disappointed.”
This isn’t the first time Liberal MPs have attempted to cause division within the party and pressure their boss to step down. In July, Vassy Kapelos from CTV said that four Liberal MPs, speaking on the condition of anonymity, expressed their desire for Trudeau to step down.
